tadao ando’s first building in new york city has topped out. situated on a prominent corner plot in manhattan’s nolita neighborhood, 152 elizabeth contains a total of seven residences — one per storey. conceived as ‘an inner sanctuary’, the development’s acoustically enhanced façade system has been designed to ensure that residents have tranquil home environments despite the busy downtown location.

developed by sumaida + khurana, the luxury scheme is the result of a collaboration between ando and michael gabellini of gabellini sheppard associates. when complete, 152 elizabeth will incorporate a number of hallmarks associated with ando’s acclaimed architecture — poured-in-place concrete, burnished metal, voluminous glass, and a living green wall. ‘this is a major milestone for 152 elizabeth,‘ says amit khurana, founding partner of sumaida + khurana. ‘the project represents a commitment to creating unique architectural value and setting a new benchmark for quality in residential development.’

the project’s architect of record, michael gabellini, has sought to complement ando’s vision through his design of the interior and exterior spaces. each property has a sense of openness that both emphasizes a fluidity between spaces, and allows for moments of seclusion. ‘in designing 152 elizabeth we wanted to create a building reflective of tadao ando’s innate sensibility that speaks to the vibrancy of new york city,’ explains  gabellini. ‘each residence was designed with attentive detailing of a private home.’

designed with art collectors in mind, 152 elizabeth includes dehumidification systems in each home. the building also offers an automated garage with parking spaces available for purchase, a 24-hour doorman, and additional private storage. pricing for half-floor residences starts at $5,750,000 million USD, and $14,800,000 million for full-floor homes. see designboom’s previous coverage of the project here.
