almere is the largest municipality in its region and also the youngest city in the netherlands. it has a population of about 200,000 people and a policing squad of around 80 sheep that roam the lands eradicating the viral ‘bears-breech’ weed that grows in the local parks and forests.local practice 70F architecture was commissioned to design their barracks, otherwise known as the ‘sheep stable’, with strategically placed windowsand a simple curvilinear section that was a direct result of the interior use. bent steel girders dictate the rounded cross-section of project: the sheepreside where the structure is lowest, where a window is placed allowing visitors to look inside and get a first-hand glimpse into the world of maintainingthe ruminant mammals. the higher end is designed to maximize the volume in order to store the maximum amount of hay. towards one end, a sectionof the roof folds out from the homogenous contour of the slope where a loft space provides room for a small office and bedroom where the farmer can stay overnight for certain occasions. the extruded form follows a rational structural logic; steel girders support pine-wood beams and joistswhich are clad in overlapping western red cedar planks, with a beech wood interior. the stable also provides a certain public functions, as work inand around the building will be done by a vast array of people, including those with a mental, social, or psychiatric disability.
