A+ architecture has won a competition to design ‘scène campagne’ on an untouched site in communauté d’agglomération du gard rhodanien in the french countryside. situated on sloped land, the approach to the cultural, economic and social oriented facility is defined by a long planted alley comprised of groves and other flora of varying heights. the design has been conceived in such a way that it offers good circulation from the parking lot towards the public piazza. as one approaches, they will be met by a stone wall wrapping around the perimeter of the structure–visually leveling out one’s perspective of the building in its hilly context–that will protect the public areas and parvis from the winds.

the natural setting in which ‘scène campagne’ sits is emphasized and reflected in the façade of the architecture. the edifice visible to the nearby highway is expressed through a stylized tree lattice graphic that at once acts as motif–casting lyrical shadows–while controlling solar gain and muting some of the intense natural light that floods onto the interior. a zinc envelope physically unifies the entirety of the structure, that is perforated towards the west opening itself up to the surroundings while indicating the reception, foyer and bar areas. around the performing hall, the metal skin is more dense to provide acoustic comfort.

in their scheme for the ‘scène campagne’, A+ architecture aims at realizing a cultural programme that stands as a true extension of its semi-urban fabric.
