focusing on user-centered design, akif kurtulus created ‘E.R.A’, a portable cooking device that helps and eases the process of surviving any disastrous situation. to design this emergency relief assistance tool ‘E.R.A’, kurtulus took into consideration his own experiences with natural disasters and the long journeys refugees have to partake. the object finds its beauty through utility giving to every millimeter of the device a function that can solve basic human necessities.

‘E.R.A’ is easy to use: just unclick the belt to access

the product is a two-part object that works as a watertight capsule. when open it transforms into a multi-fuel burner to cook and keep food warm: its top part becomes the burner, while the bottom pot can be used for cooking or boiling water. apart from its food preparation functions, ‘E.R.A’ holds survival tools that can be used in case of emergency. depending on the geographical location, the capsule could hold tools like a compass, blankets, a knife, dehydration salt pouches, water purification tablets, a flashlight, a first aid kit, and a teddy bear for morale that can be also used as a fire starter.

you can take the belt off for further use, to do so, turn the knob and pull it out

you will find objects inside the capsule for your survival, the objects may change depending on your geolocation

take the two halfs apart, remove the gear and set up the burner (‘E.R.A’ runs on any flammable fuel)

‘E.R.A’ capsule comes with a wind blocker which also locks the pots in its place

no matter how bad the situation is, kurtulus is convinced that design can help
