in 2009 italian architect joseph di pasquale of milan-based AM project won an international architectural competition to realize the ‘guangzhou circle mansion’ in guangzhou, china. now the building is coming to completion it is set to be celebrated on december 16th 2013, where the event will mark the opening of the headquarters for guang dong hongda xingye group and the gdpe guangdong plastic exchange, the world largest stock exchange for raw plastic material. the landmark is defined by its strong reference to the iconic double jade disk, a royal symbol of the ancient chinese dynasty that reigned in the area around 2000 years ago. reflecting onto the water below, the structure completes a mirror image, enhancing this symbolic image. stepping away from a typical vertical skyscraper form, the circular building reaches a total height of 138m and features a giant inner hole, spanning almost 50 meters.

the 85,000 square meter volume also corresponds to the number ‘8’, an infinity symbol, which has a strong propitiatory value in chinese culture. a total of 33 floors are grouped to create two rows of blocks that appear along the sides, progressively pushed outwards, reaching an extreme 25m cantilever. the main interior space contains the ‘exchange hall’, located just below the central hole it acts as the heart of the complex.
