anagram architects has completed a residential building in new delhi, which employs a humble material palette and integrated greenery. ‘outré house’ is a six-storey structure that seeks to establish a bond between the act of making and the use of material, a relationship that the architects say has been neglected in recent years. ‘from bespoke concrete formwork and poured flooring to curved joinery and rhythmically notched masonry, the design releases its handmade construction from the constraints of the straight line,‘ explain the architects.

in response to the rigidity of the city grid, anagram architects has designed a curvilinear structure that creates fluid spatial configurations and internal rooms that transition smoothly. ‘the city grid and its volumetric controls, most simplistically, resolves into rectilinearity,’ continues the design team. ‘this boxform resolution of the program unavoidably results in spatial compartmentalization, on top of which real estate imperatives encourage apartment stacks of cookiecutter floor plates.’

the building has been designed to co-exist with the natural world, and uses vegetation to revive the bond between the structure and the natural world. moving away from industrial architecture, the façade comprises a combination of wooden louvers and vertically installed planters. this method culminates in the scheme’s rooftop garden, where small trees and other plants are found, offering an elevated respite from the urban setting.
