andrew bromberg of Aedas has proposed a 45,000-square-meter tower to be built by 2019 in the heart of shanghai, china. the project, will host a vertical office tower over a retail podium and feature a bridge between the low-rise, residential developments to the south and changshou road to the north.

the design of the tower embodies an articulation and softness that is displayed in the round corners that dissolve into the surroundings and sky. at lower level, the tower will aim to promote urban activity by offering retail opportunities. this retail steps away from the tower setback to the property edge, with lush terraces as an extension of the green park to the south. the entrance appears at both ends facing the busy pedestrian junctions and connecting the two metro station entrances.

the scheme’s placement and angular orientation is a deliberate result of optimising views. the verdant landscaping on the podium terrace balconies will reduce solar gain into the project by maximizing the green on site in a naturally-ventilated environment. furthermore, the curtain wall façade made of low-e, low-iron glass features a front face which gently ripples towards the top and dissolves the expression by reflecting the surroundings. a recessed ‘cave’ below breaks down the mass to a pedestrian scale and allows the terraces below to blend into the tower. as well as this project in shanghai, the architect currently has an ongoing masterplan in jeddah.
