the ‘MMMMMS house’ by barcelona-based architects anna and eugeni bach is a residence located in rural camallera in girona, spain. the location’s building regulations specify that new architecture should embody similar characteristics to the existing traditional houses such using the same stone cladding and sloped tiled roofs.

the distinctive feature of the property is the archetypal steel frame that extends and vanishes from the house itself to form a canopy over the large outdoor patio area. anna and eugeni bach’s response aimed to seek an alternative technique to realize a scheme that wouldn’t directly copy the existing farmhouses. instead, the home looks for another type of a relationship to the countryside, making a connection to the farm storage around the area.

brick, concrete, timber are mixed to created the warehouse-like interior

the layout is influenced by a warehouse, this has lead to the creation of a large volume in which smaller units are placed to offer intimacy. bedrooms, kitchen and bathrooms are placed in ‘boxes’ inside the ‘storage’. between these, crossed views and circulations offer direct relationships to the landscape around the house. with high ceilings and plenty of natural light, the circulation space can be read as an exterior space, while the boxes, are places for being ‘inside’. the height of the common spaces, and their direct relationship with the outside, instills a feeling of being in an open space.
