brazilian practice apiacas arquitetos have recently finished the ‘itahye residence’ in santana do parnaiba, a suburb of sao paulo. the client’s flexibility in designing a structure on such a steep site allowed the architects to create a truly three dimensional home with an improved relationship to the street and several moments of private exterior retreat. the ground level at the eastern end of the lot projects out over grade leading to the first semi translucent perpendicular volume housing the kitchen and dining area. the exposed concrete structure provides the necessary privacy through its thick solid walls and as well as transparency through its folding form. an outdoor terrace leads to the second perpendicular volume which contains the living area. the street in a way is extended into the house and finds itself at the highest point of the building the further one wanders towards the back of the site. the more closed off spaces – bedrooms, services, tv room – are located on the levels below, with natural wood screens that completely close off the punctuated openings. an internal courtyard breathes life into all of the concealed rooms and only from this space can it be truly understood how open it is from the inside, a contrast to the more solid and closed-off look the structure possesses from the surrounding properties. above this open courtyard, a suspended glass bridge directly connects the kitchen and dining area.
