apple store brooklyn

apple has opened its first store in brooklyn, designed by US architecture firm bohlin cywinski jackson. located at the corner of north 3rd street and bedford avenue, the retail outlet is situated at the heart of williamsburg, a new york neighborhood that has undergone significant change over the past decade. the interior scheme continues apple’s trend of adapting existing buildings to form new venues to showcase its products.

bohlin cywinski jackson (BCJ) designed the 13,700 square foot space to complement the borough’s industrial past, drawing inspiration from the building’s existing brick façade and arched openings. compared to apple’s other new york locations, the store retains a distinct look and feel, with a new retail program intended to attract passersby and serve as a gathering space for the community.

the interiors include polished concrete floors, brick walls, and acoustical wood ceilings. exposed structural steel and mechanical systems add to the shop’s industrial feel, which is illuminated by custom-built pendant lights made by a local fabricator. a large video screen at the rear of the volume is accompanied with a set of movable cube seats for product demos, entertainment, and lounging.

the williamsburg outlet marks apple’s sixth new york retail space designed by BCJ — the architecture firm responsible for many of the company’s venues designed in the past 15 years, including the glass cube entrance to the apple store on fifth avenue. see more projects by bohlin cywinski jackson on designboom here.
