in the city centre of the hague in the netherlands, dutch practice architecten van mourik has placed a rooftop extension to one of their previous buildings, the royal academy of art. a transparent volume made from steel and glass caps the national monument. windows standing multiple stories tall offer clear views of neighboring ministries and the academy’s courtyard.

moveable walls produce a flexible interior supporting education, exhibition and office based functions. adapting to the existing facades, sloping glass exteriors accommodate an existing roof window. considering future additions or construction, the entire addition may be disassembled without leaving a trace of damage to the building below.
