located in new taipei city, taiwan, and designed by architectural pursuer, ‘the house’ is a residential project whose concept has been derived from the relaxing villa lifestyle to allow its dwellers to have a quick escape from the bustling urban environment. the design was carried out from subtractive to additive processes to minimize the density of space programming. the building has been completely enclosed from the outside and opens to the inside with various windows at the center of the courtyard. by diving and subtracting the first floor, an interlocking social experience has been achieved. the unnecessary building area has been removed in exchange for a more enjoyable space program that enhances the living experience.

architectural pursuer based the whole concept on six principles: 1. all of the building façade windows are eliminated to disconnect the structure from the city environment, a courtyard opening inwards at the center of the building optimizes the design of potential space programming; 2. by implementing the subtractive strategy, the building mass has been carefully arranged to achieve the courtyard that brings a natural element to enhance the living experience. vertical arrangements of the space elements are reorganized to fully optimize the functionality with visual interlacing; 3. the building mass has been divided into three main sections with human scale elements. a designated negative space for the courtyard and its tree is inserted to connect the transit to every single space of the house, along with the swimming pool.

4. the courtyard at the center of the building opens inwardly thanks to a horizontal window that allows every single corner to be flooded with air, light, and nature. it permits family members to fluidly connect with each other at all times; 5. the boundary between inside and outside has been blurred out by the horizontal opening window. without scarifying any privacy, all the spaces are visually inter-connected to each other and also with the courtyard, roof garden and swimming pool; 6. adding a vacation element such as the 18-meter long swimming pool, outdoor bathtub and spa room on the rooftop garden enrich the living experience making ‘the house’ a piece of enjoyable and sculptural living.
