dublin and lyon-based studio, architecture republic has designed ‘brick a back house’, a private family home located in irishtown, dublin, ireland. the renovated structure appears as a single volume, extending visually from the front door to the rear wall of the site. a variety of spatial conditions, differentiated by the degree of enclosure and contrasting materials, are injected and overlaid into the simple space.

three meters – two enclosed and one that features an open roof – expand the small and narrow living space. the roof surface alternates between glazed, closed and open, setting up an elemental structure which spans the width of the house and acting as a sundial that traces the movement of light across the brick wall and floor.

polished marble encases the kitchen and dining space from which light steel steps rise to the bedrooms above. this contemporary and linear space intersects with the carved brick area beyond, divided by a thick white portal that acts as a framing device. the threshold, which fails to reach the existing brick wall, blurs the boundaries between new and old environments and materials.
