starting from a traditional southeast-mexican home of masonry walls and spacious courtyards, merida-based practice AS arquitectura creates a new structure that blends with the existing and offers a new range of possibilities.  the existing structure stands in various levels of ruin from completely reusable constructs to decaying walls with openings suggesting the existence of a previous door or window. these were elements that the architects considered of utmost importance- the architecture was not to overwhelm or overpower these conditions but rather establish a subtle support system that would allow the decrepit house to age with dignity. after its transformation, the homestead defined by the livestock and textiles it housed now offered a recreation area, boutique hotel, ballroom, weekend residences, restaurant, private villas, and common areas capable of hosting various events. while there are many interventions throughout the project carried out in steel, stone, chukum (a waterproof stucco finish rendered from a local tree), wood and glass, it can easily be seen that the original parts of the structure still define each edge and corner of the design. the modern interventions instead aim to enhance the architecture that once was (and still is) by giving it a renewed purpose and by adding to its functions in a way that is relevant for its new uses.
