chinese firm atelier FCJZ has recently completed ‘king’s joy’, a vegetarian restaurant within a courtyard building in beijing, china. emphasizing a pleasant environment, architect yung ho chang continues his explorations with the defining element of courtyard houses. each of the two courtyards become focal areas, one remaining outdoors and the other becoming an indoor dining area with a roof. a transparent overheard enclosure minimizes the presence of the structure, creating a well-illuminated and ventilated space. an octahedral screen is suspended to produce strategic atmospheres of intimacy and airiness.
