graz-based architecture firm ‘atelier thomas pucher‘ have begun construction on their international first prize design of the ‘amstetten school campus’, located in amstetten, austria. the development combines two existing secondary schools into one central location with a new music school and gymnasium. the compact five-storey cube creates a distinctive landmark to the surrounding area comprising of two lower volumes and three courtyards within a chessboard formation. the main concept behind the formal design is the creation of a variety of spaces that can organize the functions of the building.

the external facades are clad with perforated metal panels that act as a sunscreen and provide an image of constant continuity to the outside while providing a subtle sense of intimacy to the interior spaces. the courtyards are both physical and visual connections between the different areas and are the meeting places for the students during their recreational breaks. each open square has a distinct identity based on its solar orientation and landscape design. the main space also known as ‘the cube of education’, which has a program that is distributed across the five floors around a central atrium. it acts as the core spine of the school where scissor stairs grant direct access to all parts of the building.
