barcelona-based architecture firm bailo + rull has recently completed ’18 VPO’ a social housing project located in santa eugenia de berga, spain. the master plan is situated at the edge of the city and defined by 18 apartments with a linear dimension of 14 x 60 meters and interior volume of 70 square meters. the 18 apartments are compact, measuring an interior dimension of 70 square meters. the structure’s two main façades have different and unbalanced solar conditions; the street façade, facing west, is overlooking the green areas and landscape; while the rear façade, facing east, is focused on a new building located on a slope, which prevents the sun from reaching the east facade.

ensuring that all apartments have a direct relationship with the landscape, facing west bailo + rull have proposed a brisse-soleil handrail an element that works as a shield from the sun and also defines a place to enjoy the views of the countryside. located on the balcony one step below the interior level pavement of the apartments, the 2 meter wide pieces are made of perforated aluminum and define a porch area, protecting the facade windows from the vertical summer sun but allowing the winter set sun to filter into the interior.
