part of a greater revitalization project along the waterfront of new york city’s outer borough, pier 6 of the brooklyn bridge park has BIG plans in store. the bjarke ingels group is slated to design a new section of parkland in form of a massive 560 square meter cross-laminated timber triangular viewing platform. the scheme is a sweeping plane, sloping upwards to sport a lifted corner that is 5.3 meters in height from the foot of the large gathering lawn, and will feature terraced stairs that are softly illuminated, making it a prime spot for events as well as sitting and strolling.

the wooden construction is supported by thin steel columns, and will offer shade, shelter, as well as a space for indoor activities. the area below the overhang will integrate movable furniture to accommodate various programs–from food carts and picnicking to community events and small performances. sited for optimal views of the manhattan skyline as well as the statue of liberty, the 3000 square foot structure will work in conjunction with the lush greenery of a michael van valkenburg-designed landscape.

 bjarke ingels notes:
the mantaray is a small public platform at the end of the pier – equally accessible above and below. its namesake organic slopes and curves have been shaped by concerns for accessibility, safety, shelter, structure – like a manmade reef evolved to accommodate human life.

this spectacular structure will provide much-needed shade and a unique space for public events, while offering a dramatic ascent to the water’s edge,’ said regina myer, president of brooklyn bridge park. ‘we are so pleased with the collaboration between michael van valkenburgh’s landscape design for the southern portion of the park, and bjarke ingels’ design for a breathtaking architectural addition that provides a truly special moment on the waterfront.’
