in an attempt to provide a tranquil and nature-connected experience – one which is alternative to urban life – the balnea spa and retreat locates itself amongst a wooded site in the eastern townships region of québec, canada. to add to the center, montreal-based office blouin tardif architecture-environnement has designed and completed a new reception building known as the ‘pavillon des arbres’ (pavilion of trees), which preserves existing vegetation on the sloping property. the structure and its outdoor walkways are elevated above the topography by a steel framework, and provide a new entry to the facilities, dedicated to health and wellness, gourmet food, yoga, relaxation, sports, massages, and rituals baths.

in addition to the reception area, the new pavilion contains a gift shop, offices, and a lounge. outdoor walking paths provide entry to the reception building and also access the spa facilities beyond, allowing for a more forest-immersive passage through the site. the structure’s windows frame views to the surrounding wooded area, and provide passive solar heating with many oriented to the south.
