a pristine, colorless interior characterizes ‘white space’, a private orthodontic clinic located in the sicilian town of catania, italy. the immaculate expanse has been designed by bureauhub, who have envisioned the dental office as an ‘implant’ concept, as a means of referencing the advanced techniques and materials used by the client in his practice.

the milan- and stuttgart-based bureauhub have conceived a bespoke insert made from DuPont™ Corian which sees the walls and furniture of the center seamlessly merging into one another. the smoothly finished surfaces (photographed here by roland halbe) are only subtly interrupted by plug-in components such as coat hangers and toothbrush holders; while the continued employment of the polymer-based material clads the clinics technical devices, such as touch screens, and remote buttons for x-ray control or TVs displaying medical information.

the starkness of the scheme is no indication of the fact that the clinic’s patients are primarily children. however, bureauhub caters to the youngsters through the installation of multifunctional furniture that features a series of intersecting void spheres which allow the kids to climb through and rest within; as well as an expansive horizontal top offering a place to draw and study, that as additionally equipped with niches for pencils and other knick knacks.

graphics and signage are custom designed and are CNC milled into the white Corian® shell, backlit by OLED lighting modules that are powered by organic electroluminescent material.

in its entirety, ‘white space’ is an environment which spatially recalls the technical and detailed orthodontic procedures practiced there, demonstrated through small architectural details and unblemished handiwork. the result is an ephemeral and monochromatic environment that speaks to its clients and function.
