the ‘CP house’ sits on a plot of about three acres just outside villahermosa, in the mexican state of tabasco. the dwelling makes up one quarter of the ‘quinta mamá ali’, a small cluster of buildings that share a pool area with palapa, and a small chapel area with games and a party room. given the natural wonder of the location, taking advantage of it was coutiño & ponce architects main goal.

the structure is essentially two blocks, each 12×12 meters. one houses all public areas including the living and dining rooms, and kitchen. the second is home to the private areas of the home, and contains three bedrooms and a dedicated bathroom for each. due to the orientation of the terrain, the sun hits the main façade with considerable force. to deal with the constant, blinding heat, the designers chose to concrete the entire side and leave all access to take place through two solid mahogany doors.

bathrooms, laundry facilities and the two car garage are placed directly against the concrete side. this reinforces the idea of isolating the entire face, and pushes usable/common spaces towards the more pleasant northeastern view. the rear façade is fully covered with glass spanning 4 meters long and 2.8 meters high. two porches run for a total of 48 meters across the two blocks, and help integrate the house with nearby pool and palapa. the material palette is simple, and has a less is more feel. the inner and outer walls are coated and painted white, aluminum frames the glass, and the floors are made of polished grey cement
