cantilevering a curved volume above a 1910 bluestone villa, australian studio dimitty andersen architects has extended the historic building with a floating, lightweight structure. located in the heritage suburb of rose park in adelaide, australia, the renovation to the ground floor level continues the masonry language of the old house. projecting out towards the back of the site, a new upper level is contained within a fluid grey zinc-clad form, which references surrounding roof elements.

the extended volume is disconnected from the front of the building and appears to hover over the white mass below. the intersection between the rectilinear ground and curved first floor consists of a double height void that facilitates communication between the spaces and helps to filter light through to the interior. carefully placed openings allow for a seamless connection from the inside to the outside and give the occupants views across the site.

sustainability features such as an underground rainwater tank and a permaculture rooftop garden were integrated into the house, also careful consideration was given to the orientation and position of the addition to benefit from solar access and natural ventilation. the ‘rose park residence extension’ successfully combines old and new elements, redefining an environmentally efficient typology for the area.
