la cerdanya is an agricultural historic village tucked against the pyranees mountains in north-eastern spain. surrounded by farmland and a striking bucolic landscape, the village consists of traditional stone buildings with terra cotta tiled roofs.  barcelona-based practice dom arquitectura was commissioned to refurbish a cluster of buildings consisting of a barn, warehouse, small dwelling and traditional ‘badiu’ yard into a new residence and guest house. the existing buildings’ footprints and exterior envelopes were left for the most part untouched so as to preserve the landmark aesthetic.  only subtly contemporary wooden shutters along the front and rear facades provide a small clue as to the updated space without detracting from the character of the surrounding vernacular.

the interior becomes an entirely new space where classical and contemporary materials meet to create a new living experience. the existing timber beams in all their irregularity are left exposed, at times supported by the contrasting rigidness of its steel counterpart. the thick door thresholds in the masonry walls are lined with exposed steel plate which reappears throughout the interior and exterior. a new hardwood floor complements the rugged walls and scarred ceiling joists, helping to reflect natural light into the space. the badiu takes on new function by being given a canopy constructed of reclaimed beams, using traditional methods to redefine an established space.dom arquitectura completes contemporary renovation in cerdanya
