the factory 5 bike shop occupies a double-height space in a former wet market in shanghai’s jing’an district. linehouse design, who realized the project, renovated the existing grey brick and concrete walls which were preserved as a rough canvas. the first floor retail and workshop focuses on retaining a bicycle hub feel, and includes a full bar and communal table that merges into the workshop counter and register. above, a blackboard-lined mezzanine was added to accommodate an office for up to ten people.

materials were sourced as locally as possible, and salvaged when available. shanghai’s demolition sites were used for table tops and cabinetry, gas pipes for installations, and salvaged army trunks for shelving. recovered display walls were arranged to highlight factory 5’s signature bicycle frames, their mission workshop line of apparel and accessories, bicycle components and other products.
