FCC arquitectura + paulo lobo add rural hotel to portuguese winery

this project, carried out by FCC arquitectura and interior designer paulo lobo, adds a hotel building to the existing complex of a vineyard in northern portugal. completed for quinta da lixa, the ‘monverde – wine experience hotel’ redefines the site’s architecture with the insertion of luxury facilities specifically designed for tourists visiting for overnight stays.

the architects sought to make the vineyard and its wine the centerpiece of the enterprise, connecting visitors to the cultural heritage of the region’s famed production. the scheme includes 30 hotel rooms, a spa, indoor and outdoor pools, wine tasting rooms, and events and conference facilities. there are several footpaths around the property that seamlessly connect its various buildings, while the visual link between the buildings’ interior spaces and the surrounding environment helps define an intimate atmosphere with a strong rural character.

the existing buildings, with the exception of the main house, all presented a rural character, but were in a state of disrepair and degradation. the formal and functional regeneration of this space, and the expansion of the built-up area, sought to preserve its architectural legacy, respecting the natural landscape. the holistic nature of the scheme aimed to revitalise the site’s infrastructure, while fostering a dialogue between architecture and environment.
