suspended on the edge of a steep hillside, the ecological ‘biopool‘ by san francisco-based fletcher studio merges in with its natural environment. situated in zurich, switzerland the entire project includes a swimming pool, spa, sun deck, kitchen, barbecue grill and dining area. the lush, green backdrop of existing plants encloses the garden and acts as a screen from the street. a highly choreographed array of retaining walls creates a series of terraces that also help to provide structural support to the hilly site. a modular retention system made from gabion basket walls offers a level of flexibility, making it possible to divide the space as the garden evolves. the oasis features a self-regulating biopool, which uses little energy and blends in with the existing flora. in 2013, the american society of landscape architects awarded fletcher studio an honor award in the residential design category for their excellence in sustainable design.
