nestled in the lower bavarian landscape, german studio format elf architekten has completed a series of houses linked by a common themes, yet differentiated by their materials. the three structures have long pathways and sit on a gentle hillside, overlooking the natural world around them.

the ‘elementary cottage’ evolved from a saddle roof shape that was based on an exaggeration of pictorial proportions. the ‘longhouse’ appears distinctive, reduced and expressive – designed as an black, weather-beaten barn – it elegantly merges with the surroundings, as it is camouflaged by its dark shell against the outskirts of the forest.

the façades are clad in black timber panels, which give the sense of constantly changing with the wind and environment around them. reflective glazing on the exterior interweaves the houses the built form with the natural landscape.
