francisco pardo and julio amezcua have transformed a derelict house in mexico city by topping an existing 19th century structure with a new concrete and glass volume. titled ‘havre 77’, a name taken from its address, the renovated property now contains offices, co-working space, a residential component, and french and japanese restaurants. ‘this is not just a restoration, it’s an intervention’, explains francisco pardo. ‘our project aims to change the DNA of a neighborhood to respond to current social needs.’

the scheme stands on the south side of the city’s famous avenue paseo de la reforma, and is part of the region’s ongoing regeneration. in the early 1900s, the area used to be one of the city’s most exclusive suburbs, before it was caught in the crossfire of a revolutionary war and two destructive earthquakes in 1957 and 1985. today, the region is a bustling central district.

the house, which once accommodated an upper middle class family, has been radically transformed by francisco pardo and julio amezcua into a mixed-use venue, with the restaurant’s interior design directed by charles de lisle. a new two-storey steel and concrete volume has been positioned at the top of the former brick building. ‘while evoking different eras through different languages, the existing building and the new additions are naturally integrated, and complete each other like two sides of the same coin,’ explains the design team.

externally, ‘havre 77’ opens out onto the street and embraces its urban setting with an interstitial plaza to the south. consequently, the project furthers its connection with its surroundings and contributes to restoring the neighborhood’s fractured urban fabric.
