herzog & de meuron has been chosen to construct a new building as part of berlin’s famed kulturforum complex in germany. intended as a ‘place of encounter’, the ‘museum of the 20th century’ will provide increased and additional gallery space for mies van der rohe’s adjacent neue nationalgalerie — which has become too small to suitably exhibit modernist art. as a consequence, many large masterpieces from the second half of the 20th century are presented in berlin’s hamburger bahnhof. the goal of the new venue is to help unite the entire collection for the first time.

herzog & de meuron’s winning design will connect ‘nationalgalerie20’ to mies’ neue nationalgalerie underground, with the passage doubling as an exhibition space. developed alongside landscape architects vogt, the scheme was chosen ahead of 41 other proposals, with lundgaard & tranberg arkitekter finishing as runners-up, and bruno fioretti marquez architekten awarded third prize.

with the same gable proportions as the alte nationalgalerie, the building takes on an ambiguous appearance intended to reflect its differing roles as a storage facility for art, a meeting point, and a place of silence and reflection. internally, two intersecting thoroughfares divide the museum into four quadrants. the large gabled volume brings daylight deep into the building, which can be utilized at select locations within the scheme.

large-scale works of art can be displayed at the center of the plan, the busiest part of the complex. with several entrances and access points, the museum is oriented in all directions, establishing connections with both the neue nationalgalerie, and the city as a whole. see the second and third placed competition entries below.
