this nursery school designed by HIBINOSEKKEI + youji no shiro features a secluded playground that shields children from the passing street. located in a residential suburb of tokyo, the two-storey scheme is organized around this pleasant external area, which is populated with a variety of trees and lush vegetation. this provides the school’s young occupants with a direct connection with nature, something that is often lacking in urban life.

the architecture is designed to stimulate each of the five senses, with a range of tactile surfaces employed throughout the design. the architects placed a strong emphasis on using chemical-free materials, ensuring the children’s short and long-term safety. see more work by HIBINOSEKKEI + youji no shiro — a team who specialize in the design and construction of children’s spaces — on designboom here.
