argentinean practice IR arquitectura has shared with us their energy efficient casa aa residence in the city of tortuguitas outside of buenos aires, argentina. built for a family with children, the home exhibits a clear separation between adult and child, and integrates into the wooded site to benefit from outdoor activities and thermal gains. the home occupies a rectangular footprint with the living spaces allocated at the center next to a semi-outdoor green courtyard covered by a corrugated polycarbonate roof that functions as a greenhouse and covered garden. the elevation is broken up into four sections with the shared living areas and master bedroom enjoying the largest heights opening to the north to maximize sunlight. an alternating pitched green roof provides for a great natural thermal insulator and helps displace the natural footprint occupied by the building.

the structure is comprised primarily of a wood framed construction from locally-sourced lumber with deeper laminated timber beams that rest on load-bearing walls. in the cavities between the studs of the external partitions are filled with a wet-thatch mud wall which, in conjunction with the green roof, serves as a low-energy, highly thermo-efficient envelope.  the outer cladding consists of vertically-placed timber planks that create a subtle rhythm across all the facades with the exception of the living room which features expansive glass panes for light and views. the louvered system continues across windows as well providing privacy and a filter for natural light.
