the sense of adventure at johnston architect’s cle elum lake, washington ‘basecamp’ is palpable. standing at 6,560 square feet, camp may not be the best word to describe the home for a family of seven. conceived as a place to recharge between the many milestones of life, its spatial organization allows one to reorient and reconnect with nature, loved ones, and self

the initial concept included separate cabins for living, sleeping, and social activities. however, throughout the planning process, it was realized that it would be more efficient and effective to consolidate the areas into a single structure with distinct yet connected zones; all of which are oriented around views to cle elum lake. within the living block, rooms are arranged with views towards the water, and are only a quick hop from the kitchen and outdoor hearth

though each block is distinct, the design intentionally blurs boundaries between indoor and outdoor, work and play. the home owners often host international clients for their global consulting firm, so it was necessary to not only be able to accommodate guests, but to be able to entertain and work with them in a functional, natural-filled space. the kitchen island seamlessly becomes the dining table, while the dining room can be repurposed into a large conference room. ‘basecamp’ is able to sleep over 20 people, and provides an excellent backdrop for relaxation, meaningful business exchanges, and family time
