retail meets production in joya’s brooklyn storefront by taylor & miller

new york firm taylor and miller architecture was tasked by brooklyn-based fragrance/candle brand joya to create a retail environment. however, the interior was to be developed within the company’s candle production facility, providing the team with a unique and interesting design challenge. their efforts attempt to literally, and figuratively, suspend the gap between the formal cleanliness of retail, and the gritty activity of factory production.

oak veneer surfaces and a raw concrete floor create a unique visual composition

the interior features numerous panels composed of steel and oak veneer surfaces. organization is loose with gaps between panels, which allows the framing of views as well space for two to slide; accommodating forklift access to the rear warehouse. a stark contrast between the front and rear of each steel section elicits metaphorical connections to joya’s fabrication processes. centered around cast and mold, raw exteriors are placed opposite refined, finished interiors.
