‘ephemeral exchange’ by JP jackson seeks to resynthesize the relationship between structure and media in the contemporary library. actualized as an array of structural fins, the introduction of a single type mediates the internal operations and organization of the library with special attention to the storage of media and the distinctive spatial conditions conducive to the system.

inherently fluid, the project offers a space of wander in which repetition creates bays of interpersonal and informational exchange. the proposal advances a new dimension for today’s public collection, reflective of both the immediacy and ambient intimacy encouraged by the device and platforms of contemporary media. as an investigation of materiality, variant modes of transparency allow for adaptation and reflection of diverse projective potentials of digital dissemination while fusing a rigid striation of space into an ephemeral whole. further, disciplined operations of subtraction investigate the architectural expression of the dualities of public and private space.

the project seeks to employ modes of transparency for both the insert and storage of media as well as defamiliarization of structure resultant in a unified, ephemeral whole. variant levels of transparency also work to maintain an atmosphere and dimension appropriate for the enhance intimacy and independent consumption of contemporary media. the project seeks to reinterpret the distinct relationship between structure and storage evident in numerous late 19th-century library constructions utilizing iron. in such cases, the stacks were conceived as independent, self-supporting volumes non-reliant on an outer shell for structural reinforcement. ‘ephemeral exchange’ was completed as part of the ARCH 503 graduate studio at the rice school of architecture under the direction of dawn finley.
