in central france, the collaborative team of JUNG architectures and simon buri has transformed a former hospital into a gallery and community hall. the historic structure, commonly referred to as the ‘leprosarium’, was founded at the beginning of the 12th century to shelter the poor, pilgrims, beggars, and soldiers. after being used as a hostel for several centuries, the buildings were then converted into a coach house, and then, more recently, an agricultural farm.

located on the outskirts of meursault, in an area known for its production of burgundy wine, the building’s original walls had largely disappeared, but left a discernible outline. here, JUNG architectures has added a zinc-clad extension, which matches the footprint of the original structure. an orchard has been created inside the resulting enclosure, while to the west, a mineral plaza welcomes visitors and marks the entrance to the neighboring village.

the original building comprises three main areas: the gatehouse, which now hosts the tourist information office; and the poor hall and chapel, both of which offer temporary exhibition space with direct access to the plaza. the community hall is located within a restored wing, which has been rebuilt as an exact replica. together with the chapel, the hall encloses the outdoor space that serves as a modern-day cloister.

with the restoration, elements of the the original building have been reused and reorganized. ancient apertures have been reopened to provide natural light, with a new emphasis placed on creating contemporary stained glass windows. inserted between rebuilt walls that are still partly visible from the inside, the zinc-clad extension seeks to establish a dialogue with the site’s previously existing architecture.
