a retreat aimed for peaceful focus and concentration, JVA architects have constructed a small, inconspicuous annex in a residential backyard in oslo. purposely providing solitude for the clients to write and work, despite overlooking a railway track, the context of the micro-building is set withing a backdrop of dense, norwegian greenery.

the glossy exterior has been painted black with the same paint used on wooden boats

located at the edge of a north-facing slope, to maximize views, the entire north facing façade has been clad in glass, allowing ample of natural light to illuminate the space within. ensuring the view is clear with no obstructions, even the table is made of glass to ensure the scenery is completely captured.

JVA architect comments: ‘the form of the structure is a result of the shift from the wide and low north elevation to the tall and narrow south elevation.’ seemingly lifted above the landscape, the retreat rises in height towards the south giving more warmth to the interiors. the finishings have been kept dark with natural colors and materials to contrast the glass surfaces. the sisal carpeted floors, with the walls and ceiling wrapped in wood emphasize the cosy and intimate space, meanwhile a bookshelf-cum-staircase leads up to a small nook for relaxation.
