integrating the station into the city of salzburg in austria, architectural firm kadawittfeldarchitektur (aachen/graz) have added a curved platform roof that nestles respectfully next to the historic train hall. an overall master plan was applied to the surrounding area, which not only upgrades the original 1860s building, but also connects the boroughs on both sides of the tracks through a considered network of bridges and passageways. careful restoration of the intricately crafted, old transportation hall helps the site to become a new center of urban density within the city. forming a spacious and continuous roof surface above the platform area, the dynamic structure interprets the movements of the trains as they enter and disembark from the station. above the restored concourse, a landscaped urban plot and passageway help to link the various functions of the station and also provide necessary public space. pedestrian circulation routes have been enhanced through natural lighting and welcoming entrances. also the expansion of the underpass into a shopping gallery transforms a previously dark access pathway into an open, light-filled journey through the transport hub.
