it has been announced that kengo kuma‘s ‘toyama glass museum’ will open to the public on august 22nd, 2015. the cultural complex, part of a wider regeneration project, is currently under construction and seeks to revitalize the city through referencing the area’s industrial past. materials common to the region – stone, aluminum and glass – are combined to create a glittering external façade, which reflects and disperses light.

internally, a spiral passage traverses the volume diagonally drawing visitors to the upper levels of the plan. locally sourced panels of timber clad the building’s atrium, an expansive space that brings together the site’s other programs: a civic library and the headquarters of a local bank.
