this three storey structure in tokyo appears as a stacked series of volumes, organized in response to the scale and size of the surrounding urban fabric. standing on a prominent corner plot, the ‘shiro building’ – designed by KINO architects – features commercial outlets at its lower two levels, with the upper storey containing living accommodation for the property’s clients. as the building ascends, various volumes are removed from the cuboid-shaped design, providing external terraced areas that bring daylight into carefully designated parts of the plan.
