in bijlmermeer, a suburb in the south-east of amsterdam, london and rotterdam based practice, maccreanor lavington has completed a major metro station. the 550 square meter redevelopment is located on the site of the district’s original station built in 1970. the metro station is part of a successful initiative designed to curb levels of crime in the region through architecture and a variety of urban interventions that help establish the area as a thriving suburb of the dutch capital.

the project’s focal point is an elegant stainless steel entrance comprising a floral pattern. the laser cut filigree allows light to pass inside the station, creating an intricate play of sun and shadow. at ground floor level escalators bring passengers to the platform level above, replacing the previously existing stairways. at night, the structure glows as a beacon for the neighborhood, standing as an identifiable and bold structure.
