organized in a sequence of four massive seed forms, malaysia’s pavilion for expo milan 2015 will tell a story to its visitors about the country’s food and agricultural systems. through a design competition based on the theme ‘towards a sustainable food ecosystem’, the malaysian architecture firm, hijjas kasturi associates, was selected for the commission of the structure. beyond its formal influence on the project, the seed also serves to represent the pavilion’s goals for transforming industrial agricultural systems toward improved cooperation between biodiversity and commercial farming. the 2,047 sqm building houses a variety exhibits, and also includes a restaurant, café, and numerous outdoor areas upon the elevated deck.

the external structures allow for entirely open interior spaces

 

 

the structure is composed of light weight glulam (glued laminated timber) beams, built from malaysian-sourced wood. this construction method is able to produce long length spans, and also less environmentally costly in comparison to steel fabrication. additionally, the ramps and walkways surrounding the pavilion will be made from recycled rice husk decking.
