located on changseon island at the southern tip of the korean peninsula, the ‘southcape owner’s club’ is a resort comprised of several complexes positioned across the region’s undulating topography. completed by korean practice mass studies, the centerpiece of the design is a clubhouse who’s delicately curved forms embrace the landscape, allowing the building to engage naturally with its surroundings.

the clubhouse is characterized by its sculpted roof, shaped by the building’s structural organization – itself a response to the rolling terrain. the roof’s depth is revealed, giving the appearance of a vacuum-formed white concrete membrane. underneath, three meter canopies function as shading devices, protecting internal volumes from direct sunlight, and contributing to the sinuous sense of movement that is prevalent throughout the design. a central courtyard is formed of an entrance patio under the sculptural roof anchoring the complex, and framing panoramic views across the ocean.

private spa facilities are housed at the eastern edge of the site, while more public areas – such as restaurant and event facilities – are found to the west. this contrast of programs is also reflected in the building’s materiality, where the spa is designed as a closed mass, with a slightly open one meter clerestory running along the length of the structure. conversely, public spaces are glazed with extended terraces offering a sense of openness towards the surrounding landscape.
