with the need for a personal studio space, australian architect max pritchard decided to create a satellite structure rather than undergo any reformations to his existing landmarked steel and glass residence. the modest timber structure is accessible by a long narrow walkways slightly elevating to the second level where a circular tower of dark hardwood battens and golden pine plywood sheets accepts visitors through a vertical opening. the one-room studio enjoys a glass wall with views out into the forest while natural light floods the interior. the striped nature of the exterior is carried through to the interior where the hardwood battens fold along the floor meeting at a central point marking the home of a custom-made work table. an overhanging roof provides shading in the summer while vertical louvers allow for ventilation- important factors in a structure that contains to artificial heating or cooling. almost the entire project (save the electrical) was designed and built by the architect himself, adding to the level of customization to the project.
