mecanoo chosen to complete engineering campus in manchester

netherlands-based practice mecanoo has been chosen as the lead designer and architect for an engineering campus to be built at the university of manchester. the £200 million development will see the relocation and integration of a number of the school’s faculties as well as several key research institutes and foundation studies. positioned at the heart of the existing institution, the newly connected academic community will encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, designed to enhance student experience.

the project also includes the refurbishment of some of the site’s existing buildings, such as the grade II listed oddfellows hall. construction is set to get underway in 2015, with completion scheduled for 2019. the manchester engineering campus development is the first part of a £700m masterplan, a scheme that will be finalized in 2022.
