polish studio mili mlodzi ludzie has renovated a long and narrow attic into an apartment located in poznan, poland. the unusual dimensions of the space (14 meters long x 3 meters width with a highest ceiling point of 2.4 meters that narrows in the middle) led the team to call and describe the living quarters as the ‘long state’. the investors gave the studio some guidelines for the renovation: it needed to have a social zone composed of a living room and a kitchen with a place to eat, and a sleeping area with a bathroom and that they should both follow the existing division.

in order to not lose valuable ceiling centimeters from its height, the insulation layer was made on top of the roof making the original truss part of the venue’s character. similar motives were the basis for selecting the type of floor, a polyurethane resin that has excellent wear, abrasion and impact resistance. the complicated shape created by the roof slopes was painted in black, extending the color into the bathroom and living room walls, resulting in a black ribbon that bends expressively while connecting the hall with the seating zone. this geometric composition was referenced in the construction of the kitchen, the design of the TV stand and the choice of bar stools.

in opposition to the composition of the living area, the bedroom is dominated by a warm birch plywood that makes up the bed and the built-in storage. the level of the bed was raised until the window, creating a panoramic view of the old poznan and illuminating the room. in the end, the design of this attic used its difficulties and turned them into its original characteristic.
