following a controversy in prior months regarding the potential dismantling of the historic shukov tower, moscow heritage authorities have deemed the structure an architectural landmark, thus conserving its existence. reported by the moscow times, the decision was determined due to the former radio tower’s significant materials, architectural composition, structural elements, and specific location. often referred to as russia’s eiffel tower, its steel framework rises to form a hyperboloid geometry. built in 1922, it was designed by soviet engineer vladimir shukhov, and serves as a prominent example of constructivism.

after decades of inactivity, the structure fell into a bad state of maintenance, resulting in discussions of potential demolition, or dismantling and reassembly on another site. conservationists claimed this would only benefit real estate developers, and undermine the cultural and historical legacy embodied by the work, which is often referred to as russia’s eiffel tower.

as part of the conservation efforts, a number of noteworthy architects signed a petition in opposition to the tower’s dismantling, including tadao ando, rem koolhaas, kengo kuma, liz diller, and thom mayne. see designboom’s coverage on this letter to russian president vladimir putin here.
