japanese studio move design has completed ‘house-u’ a single family residence in the city of fukuoka. with the father often away from home due to work, a concept was created centered around the sense of security, yet without compromising openness or livability. to do this, the home became a balancing act of interior and exterior, with other ideas — such as the structure’s stability-evoking low height — integrated within.

a wall of wooden slats sets the pace for the design, through which is located a wide passage that circumnavigates the entire interior. all rooms, including the children’s’ rooms, bath, kitchen, living and dining areas are directly accessible via the corridor. ‘we think of it like a camp’, says move design, ‘everyone pitches a tent around the living and dining rooms.’ marooned in the middle, the hallway protects the family’s privacy, and allows gentle harmonization between each space and its surroundings.
