within the remnants of an old house in a residential district of fukuoka, japan, movedesign has constructed a bakery shop called ‘boulanger kaiti’. within this context, the architects could see its historical significance and thought it could exist as a symbol of the town. ‘we started to plan the façade not as a shop renewing the whole image of the building, but as a place that would match the surroundings of the residential district.’ as a result, the storefront has been carefully integrated into the extant structure in a way that still allows people to recognize its confections.

façade
only one surface of wall on the south side has been replaced with a coat of white to preserve the harmony of the wood and tile elements. the wide lining windows are meant to attract the interest of possible customers from the outside with a limited view. this simultaneously lets a moderate amount of light seep into the interior and compliment the warm hues of the culinary works of art.
