the ‘mt. martha beach house’ is a four bedroom dwelling by australian firm, wolveridge architects. despite a steep slope crossing the site, wolveridge was able to seamlessly connect the kitchen, dining and living spaces to the north facing pool, deck and grass areas at a single living level. the design includes a combination of open and intimate areas that maximize solar access and views to north, while simultaneously ensuring protection from harsh coastal winds for year round access.

built for a young family, the childrens’ bedrooms are sized to accommodate suitable study areas, sleep-overs, and amble storage throughout the years. they’re disconnected from the main floor, enabling the day to day activities of the household to go unbothered by whatever weekend activities are happening above.

australian ecologically sustainable development (ESD) principles such as cross ventilation play an important role in ensuring spaces can be cooled efficiently whilst maintaining a connection to the coastal region. the home is made of traditional materials such as timber and cement sheets, combined with more robust materials like concrete, stone, and zinc where weather will have more of an effect.
