when asked to design the rooftop for a newly renovated hotel in taipei, taiwain, noiz architects decided to mimic some of nature’s patterns. the terrace is located on the seventh floor of the ‘humble house hotel’, and overlooks the biggest shopping area and the famous taipei 101 tower, allowing for an endless skyline of the city. the design consisted of a swimming pool and a wooden deck.

the pattern created for the swimming pool tiles was based on the ‘reaction-diffusion system’ where a reaction creates something which is later diffused, or spread out. examples of this pattern include brain coral, sand after being washed out by a wave and reflections on shallow water. simple cubes contain the shower and reception areas, and add to the creation of this ‘urban beach’ in the middle of the city.

a uniquely shaped bench-planter complex is situated in the middle of the wooden deck. the seating object is made out entirely of twisted massing, and is supported by thin steel rods placed randomly, giving the solid massing a light sensation. during the night, the swimming pool and garden are illuminated in order to accentuate the rooftop as a symbol of the hotel, which is seen from surrounding buildings soaring above.
